A Sunflower Stalk Which Is Square
Most of nature's trunks and stems are round, but the stalk of this particular kind of sunflower is undeniably square-and with a square hole inside. The leaves, it will be noted, form a cup around the stalk which fill with water to quench the thirst of the plant. Since square stalks are possible, is it not within reason to believe that fruits may be produced which, if not exactly cubical will, at least pack more economically than spherical fruits? Some of Mr. Burbank's plum Improvements have been along this line.
