Roots of a "Fallen Monarch"
This is an overturned Sequoia in the Mariposa Grove. Note that the roots are extremely numerous, but that they extend symmetrically in all directions, there being no tap root. The failure to develop a tap root is perhaps due to the growth of the Sequoia in mountainous regions where the soil often has no great depth.
