A Thorny Climber
Beside the back fence of Mr. Burbank's garden at Santa Rosa there grow, within a few feet of each other, two blackberries which never fail to excite wonder. One is the typical thorny type shown above; the other is the absolutely smooth thornless blackberry-a complete transformation. The warlike capacities of the thorny blackberry bramble are familiar to everyone who has ever gathered blackberries.
