The Familiar Cucumber
Perhaps no other member of the melon family is so familiarly known and so universally appreciated as the cucumber. This is rather surprising, considering that the vegetable has a bad reputation as regards digestability, when eaten in the green state. The vast majority of cucumbers, however, are used as pickles; and when properly prepared they are at once savoury and wholesome. The cucumber under cultivation is a very thrifty plant, far less finical than its cousins, the watermelon and the muskmelon.
