The Freakish Martynia

The Martynia is a food plant that is not very familiar in our garden, but one with which Mr. Burbank has experimented rather extensively. The curious scheme adopted for the distribution of its seed by this plant is described at some length in Volume 1, to which the reader is referred. In the tropical regions to which this plant is native, the struggle for existence is so sharp that it is necessary to take advantage of every possible opportunity, and each plant has its own way of endeavoring to get ahead of its neighbor.
