The Heamanthus or blood lily is a South African bulbous plant. of which there are many species, belonging to the same family with the amaryllis. It will be seen that the flowers of this particular species are very attractive in themselves; but their chief value in Mr. Burbank's eyes is their possible availability for hybridizing experiments with some of their relatives. We shall see that Mr. Burbank has made very notable experiments in hybridizing members of this family.
